Product Description

Terracotta Dog Planter combines an adorable puppy-shaped design with a creative project kids can decorate and make their own. Paint the terracotta surface, add colorful details and patterns, then use the opening in the dog’s back for a small plant or turn the finished piece into a cute decorative holder.

The natural terracotta surface gives kids plenty of room to get creative. They can paint a realistic-looking puppy, cover it in bright colors, add spots or patterns, or design an imaginary pet unlike any dog they’ve ever seen. The molded face, floppy ears, paws, and body give kids built-in details to work with while still leaving plenty of opportunity for individual creativity.

Once decorated, the opening in the dog’s back turns the project into more than just a display piece. Add an appropriately sized plant, or use the opening to hold small lightweight items. EconoCrafts identifies the planter as terracotta and sells it individually. Please note that the product currently includes old seeds that are no longer viable for germination; the planter itself can still be decorated and used with separately purchased viable seeds or plants.

A Craft That Becomes a Cute Little Planter

Kids love crafts they can continue using after the decorating is finished, and this little dog delivers exactly that. Instead of creating something that gets tucked into a drawer, participants can turn their finished puppy into a decorative planter they can display on a desk, shelf, or windowsill.

Terracotta also makes a great starting surface for painting and decorating. Kids can work with the molded features already built into the dog or completely transform its appearance with their own colors and designs.

The combination of art and planting also creates an easy way to connect the project to gardening, spring, nature, plant growth, and responsibility themes. Kids can decorate their new “pet” and then help care for whatever is planted inside.

Why Kids & Programs Love the Terracotta Dog Planter

  • Combines painting, decorating, and planting in one creative project
  • Adorable molded puppy design makes the project appealing before decorating even begins
  • Natural terracotta surface gives kids freedom to experiment with colors, patterns, and details
  • Opening in the dog’s back can hold an appropriately sized plant or small decorative items
  • Finished project can be displayed and enjoyed after craft time is over
  • Easy to incorporate into spring, gardening, nature, pet, and animal-themed programs
  • Sold individually, making it easy to order the exact quantity your program needs

Teacher Tip

Turn the project into a “Design Your Dream Dog” activity. Have kids choose a name for their puppy and plan its colors and markings before they begin painting. If you add a viable seed or small plant afterward, participants can also take responsibility for caring for their new plant and track its growth over time.

Supplies You’ll Need

Bring your puppy to life with Paint and Paint Brushes. Add extra personality with Markers or other decorative craft supplies.

If you plan to use the finished piece as a planter, you’ll also need an appropriately sized plant or viable seeds and suitable potting soil. The included old seeds should not be relied upon for germination.

This Craft Is Great For

  • Schools: Combine art with hands-on learning about plants. Students can decorate their puppies during art time and use the finished planters as part of spring, nature, gardening, or plant-growth lessons
  • After-School Programs: Give kids a craft they’ll actually want to display. Participants can personalize their dogs with different colors, markings, names, and creative details
  • Camps: Add a functional project to your arts and crafts schedule. Campers can paint their own puppy planters and bring home a keepsake that can continue being used long after camp
  • Recreation Centers: Bring together animal lovers, young artists, and beginner gardeners. The project works especially well for spring workshops, nature programs, and themed craft days
  • Nursing Homes / Senior Centers: Create a cheerful decorative planter with plenty of personality. Participants can paint familiar dog colors or create colorful designs before adding a small plant
  • Kids at Home: Create your own puppy without the barking, shedding, or early-morning walks. Kids can decorate their new terracotta pet and proudly display it in their room
  • Gifts: Make a handmade gift for dog lovers and plant lovers alike. Kids can personalize the planter for parents, grandparents, teachers, or other special people

Tips for Best Results

  • Wipe away any loose dust from the terracotta surface before decorating
  • Plan your puppy’s colors and markings before you begin painting
  • Use smaller brushes for the eyes, nose, mouth, and other molded details
  • Allow each layer of paint to dry before adding smaller details or patterns on top
  • Let the decorated planter dry completely before adding soil or a plant
  • Use viable replacement seeds if you want to turn the project into a seed-growing activity
  • Protect work surfaces and clothing when using paint and other decorating materials
